Social and Political Issues which affect English Learners: Resources for Teachers
TESOL Advocacy Page
This part of the TESOL web site is open to everyone - you don't have to be a member of TESOL.
Some of the "hot issues" you will find there are updates on language policy, such as English-Only legislation, and the
Dream Act, for the Defense, Relief, and Education of Alien Minors who have lived in the US for more than 5 years.
MIDTESOL Project for Training Native Speakers to Listen
This effort is based on the observation that even minimal social contact with English Learners can help native speaker
students be more open and relaxed about interacting with fellow students who have "an accent." Encouraging this
interaction is a win-win situation.
For a full description of the ideas behind this project, see the MIDTESOL Newsletter for Summer-Fall 2010, "Being on
the Frontline: Bringing NSs and NNSs Together" (Access this issue from the "Downloads" page.)
Send your ideas for bringing native English speaking students and English learners together. Let's use this site for
collecting and sharing your ideas.
To share your idea, email Joan Chamberlin, joancham (at) iastate (dot) edu, sociopolitical chair for MIDTESOL.
