PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
BY BARBARA ADELMAN, MIDTESOL PRESIDENT
This newsletter shows the results of a lot of hard work by your board…interviews
with retiring MIDTESOLers; an advocacy visit to Missouri representatives
in Washington, D.C.; and information about the upcoming annual Conference
in Iowa.
The current edition honoring recent retirees has many contributors-our
thanks go out to them! Our Socio-political concerns chair, Barbara Schwarte,
was attending an AAAL conference at a time that conflicted with the first
TESOL-sponsored affiliate issues advocacy event in Washington D.C., so
I appointed Margaret Silver to represent MIDTESOL. Please read her article
with the understanding that this type of advocacy will probably continue
and will be a valid input stream for our ESOL concerns. I hope that when
we ask for you to express your needs, concerns, aggravations or whatever
is on your mind that you respond. It is a very direct way to handle advocacy,
and we need input from those "in the trenches," so to speak.
And now for the co-chairs of the conference, Tom Riedmiller and Cathy
Howland…these two have put in long hours and much thought in bringing
you a conference filled with great presenters and lots of activities that
will not only enrich your teaching, but also provide you enjoyable professional
development with your colleagues. Please read their information carefully
and sign up early for the conference. I Hope to see many of you there.
As this is the last column I will write as president, I'll take the opportunity
to thank all the board members who contributed to the smooth running of
the organization. And I will warn the rest of you that I will soon be
looking for new members of the board for the following year! I know you
are out there and I know where you live!
