MidTESOL Report from Nebraska

By Joan Hamilton

Nebraska is experiencing a marked increase in immigrant population, although no firm numbers are available and evidence is anecdotal. Omaha Public Schools (OPS), for example, has seen its demand for ESL services swell and has seen, in some cases, numbers increase by as much as 50% over the past year. Many school districts throughout the state who had never before are now seeing LEP students for the first time in their memory and are facing the need to provide services.

OPS' Dual Language program is awaiting a grant decision in order to get fully off the ground. OPS also is offering grant funds to help para-professionals gain further college credit.

Nebraska will again make funds available to allow selected teachers summer study in Mexico.
