The Myth of "Dan Goun"
retold by Kim Ji Eun Nielsen
Korean

A long time ago a god controlled what is now Korea. He lived on the mountain of Bak Du. There was no king or queen and no Korea. There was only one god who controlled everything. People were peaceful.

One day a bear and tiger visited the god. They went to the forest where the god lived. They bowed to the god and they told him why they wanted to see him.

Tiger and Bear said, "God, we want to be human. Can you please help us?"

The god looked at them
for a while, then he gave them
garlic and daisies. He said,
"Here are some daisies and
garlic for you. If you can stay in
the cavern and eat only these for
100 days then I promise to make
you human." Then he left.

Bear and Tiger tried to eat only garlic and daisies, but after a while Tiger was getting hungry. He could not wait anymore. Tiger said to Bear, "I cannot wait anymore, Bear. I am getting hungry."

Bear said, "Tiger, just wait a little more. I am not going to give up. If you want to leave then leave I won't." Then Bear said, "No, I mean, wait!"

But Tiger ran away. Bear was still eating garlic and daisies and waiting until the 100 days were over. After 100 days the god came to the cavern and saw a skinny bear. He made Bear a pretty human woman, just like he promised. Bear was so happy and told the god Thanks so many times.

Then Bear went to the place
where lots of human lived. Bear
tried to make friends with the
humans, but Bear did not
understand much about humans.
Bear could not get close with them,
so Bear went to the god again and
told him about it.

The god said, "It is okay. You have so much more perseverance than a human does. Even if you cannot be friends with other humans, you are better than them. If you want I'd like you to be my wife."

Bear said ok and they married. After a while they had a son, Dan Goun. He made Ko Rau, the beginning of Korea.
