Peach Baby

A Japanese tale retold by Mark Nakane

Japanese

A long, long time ago there
were an old man and an old
woman. The old couple did not
have any children. They were
sad because they wanted
children. They were very good
people.

One day the old man went to the
mountain, and the old woman went to
the river to wash shirts. While she
was washing a shirt, she saw a big, big
peach in the river.

The old woman took the peach and went home to show to the old man. The old woman cut the peach. There was a baby inside the peach. The old couple was very surprised and very happy.

They gave a name to the baby. The name was Momotaro. Momotaro means 'baby from a peach'.

Momotaro ate a lot and
Momotaro grew big. Momotaro
heard that there were monsters
that took a lot things from
people.

So Momotaro thought, "I need to fight with the monsters like a samurai." And Momotaro went to the monsters' island.

On the way to the
monsters' island he found a
bird and a dog and a
monkey. He gave food to
them and they said, "We
can go with you!"

They went to the island. They found a lot of
monsters. Momotaro
fought with the monsters
and the dog bit them, the
monkey scratched them
and the bird pecked them
and the monsters lost the
fight and gave back the
things they stole from the
people.

The king of the people was very happy. The king said, "The princess can be your wife." Momotaro went back to his home with his wife and he lived happily ever after.
