How the Rabbit Got Its Short Tail

A Chinese folktale as told by Joy Yue Wang

Chinese

This story started when animals were joking with each other.
Once upon a time there were two rabbits. The rabbits didn't have stubby tails like they do now. Instead they had very long silky tails.

The first rabbit said, "look at the grass on the other side of the river. It looks greener and fresher than our grass.

And then the other rabbit asked, "How do we get to the other side?" They thought and thought. Then the first rabbit said, "I know how!" Then he said, "Just sit and watch."
The rabbit said,
"Hey Turtle! I hear
that you have fewer children than I have."
And then the turtle said, "I have
more children than you have."
Turtles were very proud and they
got angry easily.
Then the rabbit said, "If you have more children than I have, then show me! Line up your children from this side to the other side of the river."
The the turtle said, "Ok, I will. Then
you will show me your children, right?"
The rabbit said "Right."

Then the rabbits jumped from turtle to turtle, and counted how many turtle there were. When they got to the other side, they said, "We do not want to show you how many children we have. We just wanted to get to this side of the river. We tricked you, Stupid Turtle."
The turtle was mad,
and he swam as fast as he
could and the turtle bit the
rabbit's long tail off. And
that is how the rabbit got
his short, stubby tail.
