The Boy and the Devil
a Mexican folktale retold by Juanito Villa

Spanish

Once upon a time there was a boy who ran away from home. He wanted to to be rich so he went looking for a job. When he was walking down the road he saw a man. The man was dressed very good and he was coming toward the boy.

He asked the man if he could work for him. The man said, "I am looking for a helper. Do you know how to read?"

The boy said, "Yes."

The man said, "Too bad. I'm looking for a boy that can't read."

The boy told him, "Maybe you can give work to my brother. He's slow and he's way in back of me." And the boy said, "Good-bye."

The boy turned his poncho around and hat, and then he ran back to meet the man again on the road. He told the man that he wanted work. The man said, "I am looking for a helper. Do you know how to read?"

"Oh, no, sir!" said the boy.

The man said, "You're in luck!" I'm looking for a boy to clean my office and my library. You can work for me."

So, the boy started to work for the devil. Soon the boy started to look in the books and drawings of the devil. When he figured out who the man was, he started to learn the devil's tricks.
One day, the devil caught him reading his book of secrets, boy did he get mad!

He turned into the devil like we know him and he started to chase the boy.

Just when he was about to catch the boy,
the boy turned into a rabbit.
The boy was too fast and
so the devil turned into a coyote.
And right when it looked like the devil
was going to catch the boy, the boy
turned into a pigeon and he flew away
from the devil.
The devil got even madder! And
he turned into a hawk. He flew faster
and better than the pigeon and almost
caught him. But!. . .
Just when the hawk was about
to grab the pegion, the boy turned into
a stone and fell to the ground.
The Devil turned himself into a piece of rice and also started to fall to the ground. When the stone hit the ground, the boy turned into a rooster, and when the piece of rice hit the ground, the rooster gobbled it up.
So that's why the devil is always careful when he is around boys.
