One Hundred Eggs
A Vietnamese story retold in English by Anh Nguyen

Vietnamese

A long time ago, King Duong, a sea dragon, married Long-nu. She was daughter of Dong Dinh, king of the sky. They had a baby. His name was Long-quan. He was just like his father. He liked to swim and he was very strong. Soon he became king of the land and people of Lac-Viet.

In Lac-Viet there were three monsters. One was called Ngu-tinh, a fish that ate fishermen. The second one was called Ho-tinh. It was a monster that liked to eat children. The third one was called Moc-tinh. He liked to steal pigs and chickens to eat at night.
Long-quan killed Ngu-tinh by cutting his head off. For the second one, Long quan tied a rope out of silk. He trapped Ho-tinh by putting the rope by the cave. The last one was Moc-tinh. He lived in a thousand year old tree. Long-quan cut down the tree and Moc-tinh died.

After all that, the king from De-lac came to visit. He brought his daughter Au-co. Soon Long-quan married Au-co and the wedding lasted three days.

One year later Au-co got pregnant. After seven days she gave birth to 100 eggs. Inside of each egg was a baby boy. Soon the eggs grew and the babies popped out.

Long-quan would sometimes go to the sea to see his mom and dad. He left his wife all alone so they had a fight.

Long-quan told her, "I come from the sea. You come from the sky. We are not meant for each other, so I'm going to take 50 kids and go to the sea. You take 50 kids to the sky.

So the Vietnamese come from the sea and the sky.
