Sample Swap Shop Lesson Plan

THE WEATHER

Any level with modifications

This lesson plan could be apply in almost all levels of ESL by making a few modifications. In this activity the students will have the opportunity to speak, read, write and listen the English language. Since we live in Iowa, the weather is an important factor of our lives, therefore a lesson about the weather seemed to me very appropriate.

Goal: The students will learn new vocabulary about the Weather. They will understand when reading, listening or watching a weather report.

Objectives:

1.- The students will become familiar with new vocabulary and expressions in English.
2.- The students will learn the verbs used in English, when talking about the weather.
3.- The students will recognize pictures, questions, and answers used daily in English.
4.- The students can work on a puzzle, a memory game, or any other activity related to the weather.
5.- The students will create a weather report presentation for the class, after watching and weather report on television.

Warm-up activity:

Begin the class as usual by greeting everyone. After students respond the teacher should say something about the weather e.g. "I am very happy today because it's sunny". Then, the teacher can ask students what kind of weather they like and why? After a few students answer the teacher can show pictures, a transparency, or simply write on the blackboard the new vocabulary: Celsius, cloudy precipitation, predict, Meteorologists.

Activities:

Students can work on an article of the newspaper or magazine. The class can read the article, for example: one student can read while they rest follow silently. Then another student will read and so on. The teacher can divide the class in groups in which there is a reporter, the whole group reads a paragraph, then they discuss it and the reporter tells the class about the information in their paragraph.

Students can work on puzzles, memory game, or any other game the teacher might have. Perhaps, do some writing activity in their journals describing the weather for each season then compare the different vocabulary used for each season.

The teacher will show a clip of the weather report from the television news. The teacher gives a hand out with questions about the weather report then they can discuss it.

The students should go back into groups of three or four and prepare a small weather report presentation, which they will have to present to their class. The teacher can provide them with visuals or help them with ideas so the students themselves can make their own visuals.

Closure:

The teacher can ask several questions about a different articles in the newspaper to make sure the students understand the new vocabulary or expressions about weather.
